Researching Software Alternatives

September 28, 2009 11:33 by Scott Van Dam

The following post details the fourth step in our series on 9 critical steps in selecting enterprise software that will optimize your business.

In our previous software selection post we discussed the importance of identifying and capturing business requirements.  Today's post is discussing the fourth critical step to successful software solution implementation which is researching alternatives - the excercise of taking the business and system requirements and determining criteria for alternatives, searching for alternatives and documenting your search.

Before you begin ensure to list the high level criteria that the application must contain in order for the solution to move forward and use this criteria to filter our unsuitable products.  Finally ensure to document your search and analyze each solution by capturing the following information:

  • Product Name:
  • Company Name:
  • Website:
  • Price Range of Solution:
  • Strengths of the Offering:
  • Weaknesses of the Offering
  • List potential risks of offering
  • General Notes

Please feel free to list and share any other information that should be analyzed and included in your long list of product alternatives.
